Dear Ms. KnowBody,
I am writing because I don't think anyone else could understand. I think I have bulimia. I try not to eat and so later in the day I get really hungry and eat a lot of food. After that I throw it up because I feel guilty. On a different site I read that this can kill you. Is that true??? Please answer this because I would really like to know how it can kill you.
I am so glad that you were brave enough to write this letter. And yes, I do understand. Bulimia is an eating disorder that many girls struggle with, but you can get help and get back on track.
The first thing I would say is that you should not let your body get so hungry that you want to eat everything in sight. You describe a very common cycle of starving that leads to binging that leads to guilt that leads to purging and then starving again. This is not natural for your body, and it makes sense that if you don't eat enough earlier in the daytime you will overdo it later on. To break the cycle you need to eat more throughout the day.
Secondly, I would suggest that you find a therapist or counselor who can help you understand why you are doing this. Some girls try not to eat because they feel fat, or upset, or out of control. A good therapist will help you to deal with the issues that are making you feel this way so that you can break the cycle of the eating disorder.
Finally, bulimia is a serious illness that can harm both your physical and mental health. For that reason, it is important to get yourself out of the starve-binge-purge cycle. It may be difficult, but you need to take charge of your health and get treatment as soon as possible. Please visit this website - NEDA.
All the best,
