Chris wants to know what's in her pants...

Dear Ms. KnowBody,
I just started to find this yellowy white stuff on my underpants. What is it?

Ms. KnowBody says it's healthy...

Dear Chris,
That yellow/whitish stuff is called vaginal discharge, and it's totally normal! The vagina produces this mucousy stuff to help your body stay clean, and flush out any bacteria or germs that may have entered. Healthy vaginal secretions can have a mild smell, or none at all. They can be clear, white or yellowish, and are the consistency of mucous.

You may notice more than normal vaginal discharge at certain times:

  • During ovulation (the middle of your menstrual cycle when an egg is released from your ovary)
  • If you are pregnant
  • When you take birth control pills
  • When you are sexually aroused

Changes in your vaginal discharge can be a sign of infection. If you notice changes in the color, smell or amount of discharge, along with itching or pain in the vaginal area, you may want to be examined by your health care provider.

Isn't your body amazing?

Healthy regards,

Ms. KnowBody

Dear Ms. KnowBody,

So well this is wierd, but I Have been seeing White Stuff in my panties. I really dont think this is normal, but im afraid to ask my mama or friends if it is normal. And of coarse if im afraid to ask my mama or friends i cant go to the doctor because my mama will ask why i need to go to the doctor and, Well yeah. But my question is, Is this white stuff in my panties normal ? Please help.

Dear Diaamond,

First of all, I want to thank you for your question. Secondly, I want to reassure you that what is happening to you is completely normal. About six months to a year before a girl gets her first period, her body prepares itself by making a discharge that shows up as what you describe -- white stuff in your panties. Your body is starting to change, and this discharge will become a normal part of your monthly cycle once you get your period.  This is a normal part of growing up and going through puberty. You can wear a pantiliner (a thin pad that you put on your underpants) and that may make you feel more comfortable.
